Get Sharks Off the Hook
The See and Sea shark campaign ‘Get Sharks Off the Hook‘ is now well under way. We have teamed up with GVI (Global Vision International) to help spread the word and recruit restaurants onto the project. So far it has been a great success with fourteen restaurants committing to the cause. A surprising amount of restaurants weren’t interested in getting sharks off the hook and in the ocean, and an even more surprising number of restaurants actually had shark in some form on their menus!
Shark Guardian Visit Khao Lak

Shark Guardian at Walkers Inn Khao Lak
Lots of other shark happenings have also been taking place recently. Last week Shark Guardian were in Khao Lak to do a presentation about shark finning and the declining numbers of sharks in the oceans. This presentation went very well with many divers from around the area joining for the event held at Walkers Inn.
Shark Guardian told us about the great work they are doing with children’s workshops in Bangkok and around Thailand. It was encouraging to see others fighting for the cause and positive that different groups are coming from different angles. If we all work together we should be able to target all demographics about the problems with shark finning and over fishing and how we can prevent these animals from becoming extinct.
In exciting news Shark Guardian will be joining forces with See and Sea to spread the word further afield with Koh Lanta, Krabi and even Phuket in sight.
CITES 2013
Another wonderful achievement last week came out of the CITES listings of Whitetip Oceanic and Hammerhead Sharks on Appendix 2. These species will now be protected against international trade without a permit and permits will only be granted if sufficient reason is given and outlined conditions are met. This is a fantastic step in the right direction, but it is only a step. There is still a lot more work to be done to fully protect these species and it is going to be a long journey.
We can all make a start in Khao Lak to Get Sharks Off the Hook by committing to eating at shark friendly restaurants.
If you would like to get involved please contact us.
**Poster will shortly be going on display in Khao Lak restaurants that want Sharks off the Hook.
